Let's hope that this means I'll update Particles of Awesome regularly again! Stay tuned, guys, I do this for the sheer pleasure of talking down to you. Games mentioned in this episode (along with their release dates):

FFXIII-2 did a few things right, surprisingly, though it excelled in game play only while presenting an otherwise horrible story. I really liked how I could customize my monsters and utilize my enemies' flaws to my advantage. A fair shot. The entire "paradox" nonsense is just that: nonsense. Here's the one piece of the soundtrack that I liked:
Here's a cool leveling spot I decided to highlight:

So, basically, I play the first few hours of FF13-2, then end up trashing the teenage girls who wrote the story and praise the improved game play. This game is definitely worth checking at least the demo out. Fair. Contact:

Story still looks like giant buckets of fail, frozen and shaped like your best friend's mom, but we'll see. Game play's looking pretty solid. I'm being reminded of FF10/FF12 when it comes to colors, music, and freaking freedom to explore. Final Fantasy 13-2 comes out in January 31st (February 2nd in Deurope). No, the 'd' is there to make it sound like derp. Contact:

In this episode of Particles of Awesome, I pretend to neutrally explain "camping" and "rushing" but end up bashing campers instead. I'm biased, but campers are irredeemable to begin with, so I guess I'm safe. I try to explain each approach's vulnerability/value per game type and in general. Strategic cloaking of an area (base) versus playing KC and not being able/being inclined to pick up tags makes for a liability, not a valuable part of any team. Being a versatile, mobile player versus being a slow, generally immobile one is absolutely moronic. I think a more balanced approach to such a fast-paced game is the smartest thing to do. It's more rewarding to confront an enemy and come out on top as opposed to hogging a corner and shooting people from afar. Adapting to the game's feel as opposed to mindlessly using ONE approach is the dumbest thing anyone can do, camper or rusher. Contact:

Hey, it's been a while! How are you? Every time I say "Final Fantasy 13" instead of "Final Fantasy 13-2," Square-Enix becomes a little more richer. I talk about Soul Calibur V and Final Fantasy 13-2 coming out on January 31st, then about the game I REALLY would rather be playing that's scheduled to be released in March. UPDATE: Taki's been replaced by a retarded teenager called Natsu. I guess I'll buy FF13-2 first after all. Contact:

It's happened to Tomb Raider, Prince of Persia (which is a series that's dead to me, but a victim nonetheless), Silent Hill, and almost Metal Gear. Games-turned-movies often (always) miss, so this is my attempt at deciphering just why that's the case. Mostly, just corporate decisions. And FF7 sucks. Contact:

1. Item Discovery in Dark Souls explained in video episode: http://youtu.be/F4RG13ErJmA I don't think it matters too much beyond having the covetous-gold-serpent-ring and one Humanity in queue. Obsessing over the rating is pointless since Dark Souls is a much more generous game than Demon's Souls in terms of drops and availability of upgrades, drops, and armor sets. 2. How to return to the Asylum from Firelink Shrine

Guest: @F_AlFaadhel This was initially intended to be a two-hour episode, but I think it's so awesome, you guys can stand waiting until next Thursday to hear the rest of the discussion. World of Warcraft is a pretty successful multi-player online game. It has thousands of subscribers, and while it's losing thousands at the same time, still maintains its position as the most popular online game in the world. There are servers for people to play on in the US, Europe, even China, Japan and Korea. Mechanically speaking, it's a fun game. However, that's not what we talk about in this episode. We discuss what is sometimes referred to as "the manchild": a most primitive, depressing creature which some people can morph into once they tend to play the game for too long and like it a little bit too much. In part two, we continue to talk about World of Warcraft's most repellant element: The Manchild. Contact:

White Knight Chronicles' story sucks. It is not even passable. ...However, the combat is growing on me. To be fair, I've been spending the better half of my evening playing this game and if you skip the cut-scenes, this is actually not half bad. Contact:

White Knight Chronicles fails due to ripping off the following concepts: Judges (FF12), Kidnapping Troupe (FF9), Premise of "going along for the ride". (FF12), Princess turned queen who finds herself only to facing unfair odds. (FF9/12); attempt to be as original as other games in the RPG genre only to fall short due to COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF SUCK. As a person who tries to be as conscientious and very responsible, I decided to challenge myself and try to figure out why my performance in Call of Duty's Black Ops has dropped in quality so drastically. I've blamed lag before, I've insinuated that some builds were overpowered, but now I realize it's because I've become a pacifist and I'd rather not shoot anyone. If you can't read between lines, let's start a pacifist clan tag and take over this violent world of online game play: "NOU". Thanks so much for tuning in and listening to Particles of Awesome for the past few weeks, and since the beginning more importantly. I promise to focus on better, less PvP-oriented games in the future. As usual, Black Ops seems to be what I'm defaulting back to thanks to my having replayed all of my favorite games to death. Next episode may as well be a comprehensive list of all of the games that I plan on buying at the end of this year/beginning of next. Contact:

Two guests! Wow! I have people skills, what? In this episode I attempt to focus a little bit more on the nerd rather than the games. With me in this episode are @F_AlFaadhel and @HungryGooner from Twitter who've generously agreed to donate their time to talk about their favorite one musician/band, these artists' sound, and what makes them appealing to everyone involved, respectively. My guests' contributions come in the form of Opeth and The Doors, while I of course, go with Nina Simone. This episode is a bit on the long side, so feel free to listen to half and check back later. In any case, I think the pace is pretty great. Faris' Suggestions Herolike's Suggestions CORRECTION Contact

Lots of nerd rage was heard and consequently, lulz were had by all. I wanted to like this game, and like I said, it is playable, but it'll make sure you hate it by the time you're done if you're bothered by inconvenient respawn points (don't even try to give me any lip about this being challenging, this is downright sloppy work), "customizability" which only works if you spec a certain way, and no creativity to speak of. I was never a fan of fighting games, I really don't really see the sense in playing them because once you beat a game on one character, you've beaten them on all of the characters. ...At least that was pretty much it, to me. Needless to say, it is an undeniable truth that fighting games are intended for multiple player game play, and my guest @ReyMagnus from Twitter explains just how many levels are involved in the makings of such a statement. There's more to fighting games than button mashing and hoping you land a combo, there's the matter of learning the moves, and more importantly, learning your opponent's stategic inclinations which involve fiegning combos, sounds, and mixing a cocktail of all of these factors. Truly a deeper genre than I thought. Absolutely not my thing, still, but worth the listen if you think that fighting games are just button-mashing and trying to get in as many combos as you want. There is an avid, lively community of fighting game fanatics who truly love this genre. This episode is a hot mess. I was eating pufak, I was having candy, I'm horrible.

ORIGINALLY LONGER THAN JUST 12 MINUTES! I seriously need a better recording program. :/ This is the original take of the Ramadan shows episode. I had hoped to have two guests for this episode, but I had misunderstood that Om 3athby would not be available at the planned time of recording. Needless to say, this was the first take of the Ramadan shows featuring Om 3athby when we fired up Skype one day after some late-night recruitment (it's how I get most of the guests on this snazzy podcast). In this show, my guest 9aboo7a and I discuss the infamously dubbed "Ramadan shows", specifically ones produced in Kuwait which seem to only succeed if controversial. The pedestal for this sad phenomenon to air its powdery venom is through the alleged issues that these shows try to masquerade as ones existing in society and are worth addressing. The problem is that these imaginary issues are not only unrealistic, but are if anything, regardless of whether they exist or not, do not represent the modern Kuwaiti society. We discuss this horrible trend blending into other 5aleeji shows and about how the standard really needs to rise back up to what it was. We also deviate a little bit to talk about the private sector and government sector job situation. Contact:

SORRY! THIS EPISODE WAS MEANT TO GO UP ON THURSDAY--AND IT DID--RIGHT ON TIME--WITHOUT ANY AUDIO. THAT ISSUE HAS BEEN MODIFIED TO JUST NOT BE ONE ANYMORE IN THIS REUPLOAD! Oopsie, English speakers, unless you know Arabic, half of this episode won't really make much sense. I am joined with Robokick to talk about our favorite gaming genres in this episode, which then inevitably branched out into a discussion with how some titles are suffering quite a bit due to some horrible management choices--namely in regards to titles that were once fantastic and are merely medoicre, if not embarrassing now. Not quite the longest episode, but probably the longest, most focused one on gaming. Unless you put all the episodes together, then it's just one confused rambling about gaming.

June 14, 2011 02:45 AM PDT
It's becoming obvious to me that this series won't be as long as I thought it would be. If I had to sum it up, I'd say that so far, a nerd is someone who immerses themselves and a considerable time of their life into something that they like on a level that is by no means superficial. Perhaps it's an idealist escape sort of situation. In this episode I talk about my findings based on two surveys dispatched regarding the traditional, primeval schoolyard nerd and the gamer nerd. Tell me what you think on Twitter (@herolike), or better yet leave a comment! Episode 15 - Nerd Culture: An Introduction (SURVEY ATTACHED!)
June 07, 2011 01:11 AM PDT
LATE ADDITION: In order to garner enough information for this series to grasp at any hope of reasonable credibility, it would be awesome if you answered this quick, anonymous survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/RTH6LNS about next week's episode on the first type of nerd: the type that got good grades in school. This is probably the most realistic, standard blueprint of nerd. It seems to me that nerd culture simply does not stop at someone who's an avid gamer, is inappropriately committed to the world of film, loves comic books, and knows everything about computers. I think that people choose to be nerdy about their favorite thing and am attempting to define what makes a nerd, if it in fact can be used as a verb and not a mere noun to label someone. The series will define the following groups of nerds, from the most obvious stereotype to the least socially un-alarming sort. I would love to have comic book nerds, video game nerds, computer nerds, movie nerds, book nerds, and of course, sci-fi nerds to come on as guests, explain why they consider themselves to be nerds (or why they do not, but some people go ahead and do that for them anyway) of that specific genre as well as introduce it. We also discuss how it affects gaming (arguably) and then there's some general nerd talk.

So I'm not a big fan of driving games, nor am I big on soccer games either. I was approach on Twitter by @SenorFais after I had posted a few hundred tweets asking for guests to come on the podcast. In this episode he explains which he considers to be the best driving and soccer games and why. If you pick up on any technical difficulties, you're probably right. You can find me here. Episode 9 - Intellectual Property: Just How Fragile Could It Be?
April 21, 2011 12:34 PM PDT
I think the fact that we live in such an obnoxiously over-exposed world could be impacting creativity, and not in a way that's entirely good. Om3athby joins me again to discuss the case of a large company being implicated in a case of art design theft and what it could mean for us, citing other examples too. New episode every Thursday +3 GMT. Episode 8 - FPS Redemption
April 14, 2011 09:16 AM PDT
The next logical thing to do after bashing the FPS genre is to explain when and why certain FPS titles are better than others. Episode 7 - FPS Titles: Enemy or Suck?
April 07, 2011 12:38 PM PDT
What's with FPS titles taking over current-generation gaming these days, anyway? Episode 6 - PC vs MAC: Gaming Prowess
February 16, 2011 11:00 AM PST
So it's a bit of an unfair comparison, so what? I like to kick'em while they're down. God knows a visible chunk of the MAC'sters make it a point to be as obnoxious as possible when it comes to making the claim that their machine can do it all. PC is the king of gaming! Episode 5: Driving 101: What Not to Do (Part 2 of 2)
January 31, 2011 02:59 PM PST
Last, and second part of episode, "Driving 101: What Not to Do". Episode 5: Driving 101: What Not to Do (Part 1 of 2)
January 31, 2011 02:48 PM PST
Part of what makes driving fun is the fact that one is literally free to go where they wish on the road for the small exchange of abiding by very basic, simple laws that govern what can and cannot be done in the name of safety. Om 3athby and I discuss the merits, shortcomings, and complete disregard for these laws, why they exist, as well as how awesome we are at driving, despite being women. Episode 4: The Components of a Revolution
January 28, 2011 09:58 AM PST
Revolutions are the product of people, the true wealth of nations, mistreated by the authorities entrusted to keeping them content and able to live productive, safe lives. The mistreatment of people is an odd phenomenon in that they seem infinitely patient right before they are no longer that; this episode sheds a little information about how even you can start a revolution today! [WARNING: Satire ate your baby.] Episode 3: Geeks vs Nerds
January 10, 2011 04:31 PM PST
While the noble geek and the wild nerd are two very distinct subpsecies of man, it is important, as an educated person living in today's world to be able to differentiate between these two creatures. This episode attmepts to lay some basic foundations explaining how the nerd and the geek overlap only to diverge. Episode #01 Live!
December 23, 2010 02:34 PM PST
The first actual episode. I went with a little (LOT) more structure in this one. I was reading off a script that I prepared and I'm pretty sure you'll be able to tell when I'm rambling and when I'm not. ALSO KENNEDY. GOOD GOD, KENNEDY. Episode 0.5: What Am I Doing?
November 21, 2010 07:20 AM PST
When I say "write me" I mean post a comment here. ...But, seriously, please leave any feedback. I know I talk fast and I know I'm all over the place but I've been recording for like an hour now. ): |
